What is Self Awareness?

➖  The Journey of Reuniting with Yourself

In this fast-paced, information-overloaded era, we are accustomed to seeking outwardly—chasing success, relationships, and a sense of belonging—yet we often overlook the most fundamental question: Who am I?

Self-awareness is the ability to return inward and face our true selves. It’s not simply about self-analysis or self-criticism, but a gentle and firm recognition—an awareness of our current emotions, thoughts, bodily sensations, and even deeper beliefs and subconscious patterns.

Before developing self-awareness, many people just follow what others are doing without questioning whether it's right for them, whether it's appropriate, or what consequences following or not following might bring. If the choice turns out to be beneficial, they feel happy and fortunate. If it turns out harmful, they feel unlucky and disappointed. But all of this is unconscious behavior—reacting emotionally to consequences without realizing the choices were made on autopilot. And the outcomes, though unexpected, were unconsciously created. This often leads to regret. So how do we correct this? Through self-awareness.

The first step toward self-awareness is to pause. In your daily life, take a few minutes to put down your phone, close your eyes, and simply notice the tension or ease in your body, and what your inner voice is saying. You might realize that the “voice” pushing you forward isn't your true self—it’s a kind of autopilot formed from past experiences.

The more aware you are of your automatic reactions, the more you can choose your responses rather than simply react. Before awareness, we act without knowing we’re acting. With awareness, we watch ourselves act—and in that watching, reflection begins, and wisdom arises.

This awareness not only helps us release emotions and stress, but also awakens our inner strength and wisdom. Many of the relationship struggles and emotional issues we face don’t come from present circumstances, but from parts of ourselves we’ve never fully seen or understood. Without self-awareness, we can’t recognize our real needs or the answers we seek. We may not even realize we need healing—or perhaps even a past life regression.

Are we here in this lifetime just to carry these unresolved issues into an even more distant future, pretending they don't exist? Only by returning inward and stopping the avoidance can we discover that the self we've been seeking has been patiently waiting for us all along.
