Energy – A Word Familiar Yet Mysterious
Energy — a word many have heard but few truly understand. What is it, really, and how does it work? How can we begin to perceive it?
Energy brings change and perception. A flower, a blade of grass, a tree — though they appear still, the vibrant green we see reveals they are alive. What gives them life and sustains their appearance is energy. This energy, while different in composition and source from the electricity powering our homes, still belongs within the broader category of "energy."
So, what drives the growth, renewal, movement, and transformation of all things? Is it electrical energy? Perhaps, but not entirely. Our emotional shifts, behaviors, and patterns of thought are also expressions of energy in different forms. Planetary motion, sunrise and sunset, the rise and fall of tides, and the cycle of life and death — all are energy in motion. Without energy, none of this would operate; everything would become static, like an unmoving painting.
Yet this energy doesn’t move chaotically — it operates with order. Without that order, a flower would no longer be a flower, grass no longer grass, and humans no longer human. But with our current human perceptual capabilities, it's beyond our reach to fully observe, summarize, or witness the dynamic flow of energy. As a result, most people do not see it. And because common knowledge is often based on “seeing is believing,” it’s difficult to perceive the full truth of how the universe is composed — leading to disputes and confusion.
Since energy expresses itself in many forms, the diversity of all beings, the complexity of human experience, and the flow of worldly affairs each hold unique qualities. These differences often create distance between people. When everyone believes they are “right,” it’s easy to understand oneself but fail to understand others — or even to lose sight of both. Thus, one of our greatest lessons in life is learning how to understand that which is different from ourselves. Will we respond with exclusion and self-interest, or with shared prosperity and coexistence?
Can you see it? Energy leads us to ponder such questions.
We all know the power carried in a single seed. When planted in the right environment, it will grow. Yet if it faces a storm too fierce, or is eaten by insects, it may not survive. From our perspective, its journey ends there. But does the energy of its life truly end? No — what we see is the plant’s form fading, but its energy returns to the earth. We define this as “death,” but it's merely a transformation of form, not a disappearance of energy.
So we may understand it this way: everything is made of energy — both the visible and the invisible. Our emotions, especially, are expressions of our inner energy. They are reactions to the world, reflections of karmic ties from past lives, and the result of relationships in this lifetime. Yet we often lack the knowledge or guidance to comprehend the laws behind these energies. This absence of understanding leads to confusion, like being lost in a vast, untamed forest — bewildered and without hope.
At times, we may even witness people tangled in the illusions of daily life, unable to see clearly, yet strangely satisfied with their confusion. It’s fascinating, in a way. But one day, a person may begin to question this sense of being lost. They begin to seek answers — about the past, the future, past lives and this life. Along this path of seeking, we slowly discover our true selves. The journey is rarely linear — we take steps forward, then stumble back. But those who eventually find their answers arrive at a deep inner peace, free from confusion, at ease with life.
